Fortescue in Brazil
In Brazil, Fortescue intends to develop a green hydrogen project at the Industrial and Port Complex of Pecém, Ceará. The project will have a production capacity of 168,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum (tpa) and will contribute to the decarbonization ambitions of Brazil and the world.
Green hydrogen could be a vector for Brazil's green neo-industrialisation, working as the basis for a new production structure, which will also include segments such as mining and green steel, e-fuels and fertilizers, among others.
About Fortescue's Project in Ceará
The Fortescue Green Hydrogen Plant in Ceará is a project for the generation of green hydrogen and other green products in the Industrial and Port Complex of Pecém, Ceará.
This project will be powered by Renewable Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to produce hydrogen and other green products.
Actually, the Fortescue project is in the pre-feasibility phase. In 2023, the company submitted the Environmental Impact Study (EIA) to the State Superintendence of the Environment (Semace), to obtain the Preliminary License (LP).
Fortescue held a public hearing with communities and other interlocutors to present the project's EIA. The hearing was well received, as a result of prior engagement with stakeholders.
Recently, the State Council for the Environment (Coema) approved the EIA and granted the Preliminary License, which represents an important milestone for the development of the project. The next step is the preparation and presentation of the Basic Environmental Programs (PBA) to the authorities, which are essential for obtaining the Installation License (LI).
Project Overview
- The final production capacity of the project is 168,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of green hydrogen, based on the consumption of 2.1 GW of electricity from renewable sources. The hydrogen generated will be transformed into ammonia to facilitate its transport in large cargoes. The production of green hydrogen is equivalent to 946,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of green ammonia.
- The hydrogen plant project will be implemented in 2 stages (Phases 1 and 2 - 1,200 MW and Phase 3 - 900 MW).
- The definition of the production start date is subject to multiple regulatory factors, permits, engineering studies, and technology development.
