Why Norway?
Norway has great potential for green hydrogen and green ammonia production due to the availability of renewable energy, its skilled workforce, supportive political environment, and proximity to the European market. Working together with our Norwegian and European partners, we hope to contribute to the decarbonisation of hard to abate industries, such as shipping, given Norway’s strong maritime heritage.
Hemnes was identified as a favourable location, due to its proximity to a strong grid connection and port accessibility, as well as the region’s long history with industry and interest in economic development and diversification.
We’ve entered into a conditional long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Statkraft, granting us access to hydropower assigned for industrial use from the NO4 power region. National system operator Statnett has in cooperation with regional grid operator Linea reserved 300MW capacity for the Hemnes Project.
We’re aiming to start construction in 2026 with full operations following in 2028, subject to the project achieving a Final Investment Decision from the board.
Ripple Effect
Hemnes is estimated to lead to the creation of 35 to 70 jobs from the production side of the operation as well as supporting the broader economy with indirect employment such as site services, cleaning and maintenance. This would ultimately create a green value chain that supports both the local communities in which the projects are located as well as Norway as a country in boosting its efforts to decarbonise and bolster other green projects in the region.
Hemnes follows on from our Holmaneset project, which is targeting being operational a year earlier. Together, these two schemes have the potential to produce 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year and 225,000 tonnes of green ammonia.
